Bob Daugherty, a disabled Marine combat veteran in Paris, Illinois, had the shingles of his porch roof made to display an American flag. Wilson Roofing and Construction put a new roof on Daugherty’s home in 2016, and one of the construction workers noticed a lot of American flags around the home. He suggested, as a joke, that Daugherty incorporate a flag into his roof somehow, according to The Prairie Press. Last month, Daugherty put the idea into action when Kirchner Building Center at Kansas donated colored shingles to make the project possible.
Daugherty’s heels were shattered in 1993, but they broke down completely in 2014 and he is now preparing for double foot amputations, his wife, Sherry, told American Military News. “I have given up my career outside the home to spend my life caring for Bob. I am one of the many pre-9/11 veteran caregivers not eligible for the current VA caregiver program,” Sherry said. Despite their difficulties, they are still a patriotic family. “Bob is a very proud positive person. We have struggled while we fought for his benefits thru the VA […] and we believe that our journey educated us and we try and help other veterans along the way,” Sherry added. The flag on Daugherty’s roof was completed just in time for his son to return home from basic training.
All dimensions of the rooftop flag were kept to scale through the work of Wilson Roofing and Construction. The company installed the roof as a donation for a wounded veteran and as an opportunity to execute a challenging project they had never attempted. The stars on the flag were made by a custom metal fabricator, SH Plates, in Pennsylvania, after Sherry reached out to them on Facebook and asked for their help, according to The Prairie Press. The star pieces glow in the dark, and eventually the family wants to install a light that will shine down on the flag at night.

President Donald Trump’s bold approach to North Korea has horrified many and raised the issue of nuclear war into everyday conversation, but the unconventional tactic may work in a roundabout way, an expert on US-China relations and North Korea says. Trump’s fiery rhetoric and the administration’s decision to make North Korea its top national security priority have “changed the momentum” on the issue, Yun Sun, a senior associate at the Stimson Center, a Washington, DC-based think tank, told Business Insider. In recent months, North Korea has shocked the world by demonstrating that it’s most likely just a few months from developing a nuclear-equipped intercontinental ballistic missile. President Donald Trump has responded to North Korea with escalating rhetoric, saying in August that the US would respond to further North Korean threats with “fire and fury.” Last month, he stood in front of the United Nations and threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea if necessary. He has leaned more heavily on the prospect of military action than any of his recent predecessors. While North Korea has yet to halt its nuclear program, Trump’s rebukes of the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, and the president’s open flirtation with nuclear war appear to have pushed the international community toward action. “If the criteria is North Korea stops its nuclear program, the data so far suggests that North Korea has not been stopped by real or rhetorical threats,” Sun said. But if the criteria is to get China, North Korea’s treaty ally and the nation responsible for 90% of its trade, to stop backing Pyongyang, Trump’s threats have “worked and potentially could ‘work’ more,” Sun said. “No matter how much people don’t like him, he has extracted more cooperation out of China than any of his predecessors on North Korea,” Sun said of Trump. So even though North Korea is unlikely to be frightened by Trump’s sometimes obvious bluster, the intended audience for the threats may not be Kim. Several countries have cut or curbed ties with North Korea in recent weeks as the Trump administration has stepped up its approach toward Kim, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. Over the past 25 years, the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations attempted to curb North Korea’s nuclear program through a mix of sanctions, diplomacy, and aid dollars to feed the sometimes starving nation. Despite these efforts, North Korea has continued its provocations and missile tests, culminating this year in two intercontinental-ballistic-missile launches, two missile launches over Japan, and its most powerful nuclear test yet. At best, previous administrations slowed North Korea’s nuclear progress but failed to stop it. At the same time, Trump’s threats and bluster appear to have whipped up a kind of urgency that UN sanctions and condemnations and previous administrations’ diplomacy failed to do.

When Sanders called on CNN’s Jim Acosta, he asked her about the “Madame Theory,” while mentioning that Donald Trump says a “lot of unsettling off-putting comments that sort of throw people off, that he likes to keep his adversaries guessing.” Sanders then responded saying that our President “doesn’t want to lay out his game plan for our enemies.” Acosta noted that when it comes to Trump talk, the people in Washington “hold their breath”:

Steven Seagal held nothing back when he addressed those who have disrespected our country by kneeling during the National Anthem. They are “disgusting” and “a joke” he said. “I believe in free speech. I believe that everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but I don’t agree that they should hold the United States of America or the world hostage by taking a venue where people are tuning in to watch a football game and … imposing their political views,” Seagal stated. He added, “I think it’s outrageous. I think it’s a joke. It’s disgusting. I respect the American flag. I myself have risked my life countless times for the American flag, and I don’t understand or agree with this kind of behavior. I think it’s an outrage.” Steven Seagal directed this message at Democrats saying, “We have these Democrats that have this whole other agenda to kind of — when I say Democrats, it’s not just the Democrats — but there are this whole group of leftover Obama-ites and people that feel they should … overthrow Trump. Any decisions he makes, anything that he tries to do, he gets blocked so often from the … enemies within, so it’s very difficult for him to do anything.”
